Goethe-Zertifikat B1 - modules, scoring and how to prepare
Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is a B1-level German exam of four modules totalling about 180 minutes; each module is passed separately at 60 of 100 points, and you may take or retake them one at a time.

What makes Goethe B1 different
The exam is modular. Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen are four independent assessments, each marked out of 100 with a pass at 60. You can register for all four on one day or spread them out, and a failed module is retaken on its own.
This changes preparation strategy in a way candidates often miss. Because there is no total, a strong reading result cannot compensate for weak writing - the exam is effectively four separate hurdles, and your weakest module determines your timeline.
Against that, it removes the risk that a single bad day costs you the whole fee.

Sprechen is taken in pairs. Schreiben has three separate tasks rather than the single letter used by telc, which is the other notable format difference.
Compared with telc Deutsch B1
Both certify CEFR B1 and both are accepted by German authorities for a residence permit and for naturalisation. The differences are practical:
- Retakes. Goethe: one module at a time. telc: usually the failed half (written or oral), at most centres.
- Availability. Goethe is the better-known certificate outside Germany; telc has many more centres inside it.
- Writing. Goethe sets three shorter tasks; telc sets one longer letter.
- Cost. telc is generally cheaper, though both vary by centre.
Neither is easier. Choose on availability, cost and which format suits you.
Where preparation pays
As with every B1 exam, Schreiben and Sprechen decide most outcomes - they are the modules assessed by examiners against criteria rather than an answer key, and the only ones you cannot mark for yourself.
The modular structure makes this sharper: if writing is your weakest module, no amount of reading practice moves you closer to the certificate.

Can you take Goethe-Zertifikat B1 modules separately?
Yes, and this is the main structural difference from telc. Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen are assessed as independent modules. You can sit all four at once or one at a time, and if you fail one you retake only that one.
How many points do you need to pass Goethe B1?
60 of 100 points in each module. There is no overall total that lets a strong module rescue a weak one - each is passed or failed on its own.
Is Goethe-Zertifikat B1 accepted for German citizenship?
Yes. It is a recognised B1 certificate and is accepted for naturalisation and for a permanent residence permit, exactly as telc Deutsch B1 is. If you pass only some modules, you need all four to hold the full B1 certificate.
Goethe B1 or telc B1 - which should you take?
Both certify the same level and are equally recognised. Goethe lets you retake single modules and is more widely available outside Germany; telc has far more exam centres inside Germany and is often cheaper. Choose by availability and by whether the modular structure suits you.
How long is Goethe-Zertifikat B1 valid?
The certificate does not expire. Some institutions will not accept one older than two years, but that is their own rule rather than a property of the document.
