telc exams - what they are and which one you need
telc is the most widespread German exam network inside Germany, offering certificates from A1 to C1 including job-specific variants, and its certificates are accepted by German authorities on the same footing as Goethe.

What telc is
telc gGmbH is a non-profit language-test provider based in Frankfurt am Main. It does not run its own institutes; instead it licenses independent exam centres - Volkshochschulen, private language schools, integration course providers - which administer the exams under telc's rules.
That licensing model explains two things candidates notice: there are telc centres almost everywhere in Germany, and the fee differs between them, because each centre sets its own price.
Recognition
For German immigration purposes, a telc certificate at a given CEFR level is accepted on the same terms as any other recognised certificate at that level. A telc B1 and a Goethe B1 are interchangeable for a residence permit or naturalisation.
telc also produces the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer, the exam that concludes BAMF integration courses. It is scored so that a single sitting can certify either A2 or B1, depending on performance.
For university admission the picture is different - most universities require TestDaF, DSH or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule specifically, and a general C1 certificate may not qualify. Check the requirement of your programme.
Choosing between telc exams
Three questions decide it:
Which level does the authority ask for? Almost always the constraint. B1 for permanent residence and naturalisation; B2 or C1 for regulated professions.
Is it for a job? telc's job-specific variants - Beruf, Pflege, Medizin - test the same CEFR level with workplace content. Some employers and chambers ask for these by name; others accept the general exam. Ask before booking.
Are you under 16? The Schule variants test identical levels with school-based topics.
Practical differences from Goethe
The oral exam is taken in pairs at most telc levels, so part of the assessment is interaction with another candidate rather than with an examiner. Some candidates prefer this and some find it harder to control.
telc also allows, at most centres, repeating only the failed part of an exam within a year rather than resitting everything - worth knowing before you choose where to book.
